Quality and Design

Hereke Carpet Medaillon with vases, detailA lot of different types of carpets are procuded in Turkey. They can be assigned to the regions of their origin by the basis of their typical patterns and colours. The carpets from Hereke, Bergama (the former antique Pergamon),Uşak (wich tradition is revitalised by the Turkish government today), Kaysery and Konya are some well known examples of the high hand-knotting art in Anatolia.

The designs of the Hereke Carpets were drafted by the artists exclusively for the Domabahçe palace. They united in itselves the traditional Anatolic patterns as well as parts of Persian, Mameluk and Egyptian patterns. That is shown in the detail rich and fine work of the floral and animal patterns. Since the 16th century the display of the Medaiillon became common on Anatolian carpets and they were willingly utilized in the Royal Court Manufacture as well as they come accross even today.

Nowadays the display of paintings, Oriental hunting scenes, variations of "The Tree of Life", even Christion motifs like the "Last Supper" after a painting of Leonardi da Vinci became common on Hereke silken rugs.

The display of those fine and complex designs is only possible due to the extremely high knot density of the genuine Hereke silken Carpets and the using of silk from Bursa. The minimum knot density for a genuine Hereke silken carpet is 10 x 10 knots per cm² (1,000,000 knots per m²). The present development allows to knot Hereke silk carpets with unbelievable 24 x 24 = 576 knots per cm² (5,760,000 knots per m²).

The incomparable luxurious silk carpets from Hereke with their perfection and richness of colours are rightly the proud of Turkey.

To ensure that you get actually a genuine Hereke silken carpet, each one with us purchased Hereke rug comes along with a certificate of the official Hereke Carpet Weavers Association.

To get an imagination about the knot density, I would like to invite you to take a sheet of paper, a pencil and a straightedge and draw a quadrate of 1 x 1 cm (= 1 cm²) on the paper. Fill this quadrate with 10 x 10 points. You displayed the Persian single knots. Imagine that each Hereke silken Carpet is knotted with the Turkish double knot. If you wish, you, of course, can try to put 20 x 20 (double) points in this quadrate...
